The Goddess Raises Her Voice

The Divine Feminine, which has been repressed and maligned for thousands of years under patriarchal domination, is now re-emerging. At this Gemini Full Moon, we can hear the voices of several goddess archetypes as they participate in a complex configuration called a Mystic Rectangle. The Goddess is raising her voice and we can hear Her message carried on the high tide of the Full Moon. Let’s consider what’s being expressed at each of the four points that mark out the corners of this Mystic Triangle, which are in the signs of Gemini, Sagittarius, Aries, and Libra.

(1) The Gemini Moon is curious and wants more and more information. In Gemini’s quest for understanding, it can sometimes be overly influenced by the ideas, beliefs, and opinions of others. When Gemini is functioning well, it helps you formulate your own ideas so you can find your own voice.

(2) Illuminating the full face of this Gemini Moon is the Sun in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is clear about its direction and purpose, and is not shy about sharing its perspective on things, especially when joined by wise old Saturn, who can sometimes be a bit opinionated and overbearing. Teaming up with the Sun and Saturn is an interesting trio of goddesses: Juno, Lilith, and Hygeia.

Hygeia helps us maintain a sense of well-being, and in Sagittarius, our well-being is connected to being about our mission in life, seeking the Truth, and speaking our truth.

Hygeia by Klimt.jpg

Hygeia

While the patriarchal view casts Juno as the “good wife” and Lilith as the “nasty woman” who is untamed, fiercely independent, and freely expressive of her sexuality, I see this pairing of Juno and Lilith in a different light. As Juno and Lilith walk arm in arm, we can partner cooperatively and harmoniously with others (Juno) who share our mission AND we can maintain our autonomy, stay wild at heart, and have exciting adventures in our quest for Truth (Lilith).

(3) Now let’s look at the third point of this Mystic Rectangle, which is in the sign of volcano_lightning-nasaAries, the Warrior. Here’s where things get really fired up and the Goddess turns up the volume. Uranus, Eris, and Ceres join forces to say “No more!”. Uranus says, “No more status quo.” Then, it throws down unexpected lightning bolts to break up the old patriarchal paradigm and catalyze revolutionary change.

Eris is considered a “dark goddess” like Kali, Black Tara, and Sekhmet. These goddesses can be fierce and wrathful. They don’t take any shit. According to the patriarchal myth, Eris is another “nasty woman”, the Goddess of  Discord. As the story goes, Eris was upset because she wasn’t invited to a party. Feeling snubbed and rejected, she did something that ignited chaos and discord among the party-goers.

Demeter Mourning Persephone

Now, with Eris in the sign of Aries, you can bet she’s pissed off. But here’s a new take on Eris: she’s pissed at the patriarchy for rejecting and trampling on the Divine Feminine. She says, “No more abuse! No more abuse of women. No more abuse of Mother Nature. No more abuse PERIOD.”

Ceres (aka Demeter) is also angry. Her daughter, Persephone, was abducted and raped by Pluto, God of the underworld. Ceres screams, “No more rape of our daughters, our sisters, our mothers! No more rape of the Earth!”  Working together in fiery, passionate, and powerful Aries, Uranus, Eris, and Ceres create a formidable trio of activists.

(4) The fourth point of this Mystic Rectangle brings in the calming influence of Jupiter in Libra. Libra encourages us to seek balance and work toward the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Libra the Peacemaker and Aries the Activist are brought into dialogue by their participation in this Mystic Rectangle, so things won’t get too volatile and chaotic. Libra looks for the win-win. As Bob Marley says, “You can’t have peace without justice.”pallas_athene_fountain_vienna

What can we learn from the integration of all four points of this Full Moon Mystic Rectangle? On the collective level, we are witnessing the reemergence of the Divine Feminine. As she reclaims Her voice, she speaks as the Wise Woman who guides us along pathways to Universal Truth. As she raises her voice in anger at the abuses being perpetrated by the patriarchy, she draws a firm line in the sand. If this line is crossed, She’s ready to wield a sword of protection to stop abuse and end injustice.

On the personal level, the message is to know your truth and speak your truth. Use the power of anger in healthy ways…not to harm others but to set limits on those who would do harm to you. Anger is activating and gives us the courage to say, “No more!” No, you can’t invade my boundaries. No, you can’t disrespect me. No, I won’t give my power away to you. Sometimes we need a spark of anger to motivate us to take action, not just on our own behalf, but to stop injustice in the world and to prevent others from being hurt. In what ways are you being called to action? Take care that your anger doesn’t burn you up or burn you out, so you can maintain balance within yourself.

Soul Contracts and Forgiveness

This article is Part 2 in a series prompted by my second Saturn return and reflections on a painful turning point in my life. In Part 1: Defining Moments, or “How I Lost God and Found My Way” I tell the story of leaving behind the religion of my family lineage to set forth on a solo quest for Truth.

To recap: I was 12 years old when I broke the news to my mother that I didn’t believe in Judaism. At that age, I didn’t have the inner resources to deal with the conflict that followed. I was too afraid to stand up to my mother’s authority when she told me, “You’re too young to know what you think”. This statement hurt me deeply, and in an unconscious attempt to protect myself, I shut down. I held on to my hurt and anger for a very long time, and I saw myself as a victim in this scenario. Now I’m taking a new look at my old story.

Part 2: Soul Contracts and Forgivenesssaturn_1509887c

The first glimmering of forgiveness toward my mother came when I began studying astrology. One day, I read about Saturn in Sagittarius (which is where Saturn is in my birth chart). The astrology book said, “People with Saturn in Sagittarius are often born into a family with a dogmatic religious orientation. They need to learn to find their own spiritual path.” I suddenly saw my rejection of Judaism and my conflict with my mother from a cosmic perspective. I saw that it had all been perfectly designed by a higher intelligence for the benefit of my spiritual evolution.

From this perspective, my painful experience was not my mother’s fault. It wasn’t Judaism’s fault. It wasn’t my fault. In fact, it wasn’t a “fault” or a mistake or even a problem. As Byron Katie says, “Life is simple. Everything happens for you, not to you. Everything happens at exactly the right moment, neither too soon, nor too late. You don’t have to like it…it’s just easier if you do.”

Astrology taught me that my deeply personal story (being born into a conservative religious family, longing to be close to God, becoming disillusioned, and setting off to find my way, alone) was also the archetypal story of Saturn in Sagittarius’ quest for Truth. I knew intuitively that having Saturn in Sag. was no coincidence. I saw that my soul chose to come into this religious family for a reason. My religious upbringing gave me something to push against, Saturn wall quotewhich gave me the impetus to start searching for another way…a way that would truly feed my spiritual hunger…a way better designed to wake me up…a way that I would need to forge, myself, without an outer authority telling me what to believe or how to express my spirituality.

When I realized that my painful experience had a higher purpose and that on some level I had chosen this experience, it became clear to me that my parents were simply playing the roles assigned to them. They were not against me, they were actually FOR my spiritual evolution (although they weren’t aware of this, consciously). We were all in cahoots in creating and enacting this drama. It was a soul contract between us, and we’d played our parts perfectly. How could there be any blame?

opening door w sunNow there was a huge crack in the solidified and entrenched belief that I was a victim. Through that crack, the light of forgiveness began to filter into my mind. I wish I could tell you that this first light of forgiveness completely dissolved my long-held anger and resentment. Over the years, I’ve worked with forgiveness lessons from A Course in Miracles and The Way of Mastery, I’ve taught others about forgiveness (we teach what we’re learning), and I’ve worked on this with The Work of Byron Katie. I’ve been in psychotherapy and even did a mother-daughter workshop with my Mom, many years ago. All of these things have been helpful, and I still have some forgiving yet to do. For me, forgiveness is many-layered, and I’m still in process.

Understanding that things don’t just happen to us, randomly, and that we have soul contracts with the major players in our lives, helps me accept and value my challenging relationships. I’m curious how this notion of “soul contracts” sits with you. Does it ring true for you, at an intuitive level? Does it affect your ability to forgive? Please leave a comment, below.

Gemini New Moon: Do you have a dirty mind?

IMG_4338

No, I’m not talking about sex. Sex isn’t dirty.  I’m talking about those thoughts in your head that mess you up.  Those thoughts that blind you to your beauty and innocence.  Those thoughts that stress you out.  Today’s Gemini New Moon can help clean up and clear out your dirty thoughts. Let’s move into the new lunar cycle with our minds open wide, letting the spring breeze blow through!

Peter_Paul_Rubens_-_Hygeia

Hygeia, Goddess of Health Maintenance

Gemini relates to how we think, how we get our information, and how we communicate.  This New Moon in Gemini is soaring through the sky with Hygeia, goddess of health maintenance.  When you put these two together, you get mental (Gemini) hygiene (Hygeia).  Like I said, it’s time to clean up your mind!

In its essence, the mind is like empty space, and Gemini, an air sign, is also spacious. Our thoughts are like clouds that pass through the wide, open space of the mind.  Thoughts arise and pass away. As my friend and teacher Fred Davis likes to say, “We don’t suffer from what we think. We suffer from what we believe.”  That’s because thoughts have a natural fluidity and lightness. If allowed their natural flow, they simply pass through us. But when we believe a thought, that thought becomes fixed, solidified, and it narrows our view  The vast open space of the natural mind gets closed down.  Solidified thoughts get stuck.  They can’t move on through.

We suffer the most when we believe our untrue thoughts.  How can you tell if your thoughts are not true?  One way to tell is if the thought involves shouldas, wouldas, or couldas.  Every “should” is an argument with reality.  Here’s an example: My car died in the middle of an intersection. It was a dark and frigid night, and I was ravenously hungry.  That’s why I was on my way to the store.  But my car died. I had the thought, “This shouldn’t be happening.”  But you know what?  It was happening. I didn’t know why.  I didn’t know how it fit into some Divine plan, but one thing was for sure: I was indeed stuck in the intersection with a dead battery.  When I let go of the thought that it “shouldn’t” be happening, I was able to simply be with the experience, do what needed to be done, and feel more at peace.  Then the cops came, gave my battery a jump, and escorted me home.  It shouldn’t have happened?  It should have happened?  All I know is that it did happen.

Any thought that creates stress, discomfort, or inner conflict is suspect. Any judgment about someone else is worth investigating.  Start by simply asking yourself, “Is the thought really true?”  For example, “Betty Sue is wasting my time.”  Is it true?  Maybe I’m wasting my own time, and that’s why I’m getting pissed at Betty Sue.  “Billy Bob needs to be nicer to me.”  Maybe I need to be more kind to Billy Bob, or maybe I need to be more kind to myself.

If you’re judging and criticizing yourself, those are dirty thoughts, too.  Thoughts like, “I’m not good enough, I’m not smart enough, I’m not _____ enough.” “I should be… getting more done, making more money, being more loving, taking better care of myself…”  If you’re shoulding on yourself, you’ve got a dirty mind.  Our dirty thoughts are not bad, they just cloud our awareness and put us at odds with reality. And when we argue with reality, we lose every time.

Open the doors and windows of your mind.  Welcome in the Gemini New Moon and Hygeia.  Let them help you sweep out your gull in skyuntrue thoughts.  At its best, the Gemini mind is open and curious.  It takes itself lightly and has a great sense of humor. It is like the mind of a curious four-year-old.  Everything is fresh, new, and full of possibility. Things aren’t limited by labels and explanations.  The clean and clear Gemini mind allows thoughts to flow in and out like puffs of cloud moving across a bright blue sky.  The mind is free and can move quickly, like a small bird flitting through the branches.  Let your mind fly beyond the clouds, expanding into the vast, open, unconditioned space that is the mind’s natural state.

Lunar Eclipse & Grand Cross: Rocking the Boat

La_Chasse-galerie_(1906)

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream…merrily, merrily…Whoops!

The currents are pretty strong, these days, and your boat may be getting rocked…or maybe it’s time for you to rock the boat. A lunar eclipse, with Moon in Libra and Sun in Aries, unfolds in the wee hours of the morning on April 15.  A few days later, there’s a cardinal Grand Cross (Uranus in Aries opposite Mars in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn opposite Jupiter in Cancer).  This is not the time to hold on to the status quo, especially if these Grand Cross planets are connecting with significant points in your chart.*  These powerful energies present an opportunity to take action, and create a whole new level of harmony. Let’s explore what rocking the boat can do for you:

Rocking the Self

  • Have you been playing small?  You may feel stirred up, because you need to claim your power, take a bold action, or step into a leadership role.
  • Is there something about yourself you just can’t run away from anymore?  Be courageous in facing your shadow.
  • Your True Self is way more than your personality. Inquire into your deepest nature. Explore the question, “What am I?”

Rocking Your Relationships

  • Speak your truth about what you need. If that brings up conflict, be willing to communicate and find a “win-win” resolution.
  • Have you been letting someone take advantage of you, disrespect you, or bully you?  It’s time to say, “No more!”
  • Is the form of your relationship no longer serving your mutual growth?  It’s possible to change the form and keep the love.

Rocking the World

  • Sustainable peace can only be built on a foundation of fairness and equal sharing of power.  Stand up for what is just.
  • If the world is rocking around you, whether it’s earth changes or political upheaval, you can still keep your inner peace.

In each of these scenarios, there are actions you can take, or changes you can make, that can lead to greater harmony.  When we make changes that bring us more in line with ourselves, we create more harmony within. When we stand up for ourselves, even if it brings up conflict, it ultimately makes our relationships more balanced. And when we work for justice, and respond to chaos from a place of inner peace, we create more harmony in the world.  So go ahead, rock the boat, baby!

*At the time of the eclipse, the Moon will be at 25 degrees Libra and the Sun at 25 degrees Aries.  The Grand Cross involves planets at 13 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).  If you have placements in your natal chart between 8 and 30 degrees, in any of the cardinal signs, you are significantly influenced by the current astrology.  You may find it helpful to have an astrology consultation to clarify what actions you can take that will create more harmony in your life.

Playing with Fire

With so many planets in Aries this month, the Fire element is in the house! How can we play with Fire, in our relationships, and not get burned? Fire can show up in lots of different ways: the spark of passion that fuels sexual excitement; a twinkle in the eye that incites play and laughter; or the flash of inspiration that sets you off on bold adventures. Fire gets things moving, and the springtime energy of Aries brings us back to life, after winter’s hibernation. What is stirring within you, in regard to relationships? What do you want to birth or renew? What (or who) are you motivated to move towards? What are you fired up about creating with a partner?

While the Fire element brings action, heat, and illumination, it can also get out of hand. We don’t want to burn the house down! When excessive, in a relationship, Fire can show up as an over-emphasis on “me” vs. “we”, which can ignite conflicts. Healthy self-assertion is a form of Fire that helps us stand up for our needs. But when out of balance, Fire can become aggressive, crashing recklessly past personal boundaries. That kind of fire will burn bridges and ruin relationships. In the bedroom, Fire is hot (in a good way)!  When unbridled passion explodes in ecstasy, happily exhausted lovers bask in the afterglow.  But blind passion can drive people to take stupid risks that lead to destruction. Some examples: Getting an STD after having unprotected sex or having an illicit affair that destroys a marriage.

Playing with Fire can be dangerous, or it can be a pleasure. It all depends on how well the Fire is cooperating with the other three elements. When Fire is in harmony with the Water of emotions, the clear communication of the Air element, and the stability of Earth, it can bring pure delight to any relationship! Take a look at how fire is showing up within you and in your relationships. Maybe you need to stoke the fire, or maybe you need to contain it. Maybe you need to act with courage, and ask for what you want. Or maybe you need to listen more closely, to understand the heart’s desire of your beloved. This month, as the temperature rises, have fun and channel your passion in creative ways!
