Disrupting Patriarchy: Getting back to balance

The Libra New Moon is typically a sweet time for connecting with others in ways that are loving, peaceful and harmonious. But this is not a typical Libra New Moon, and the revolutionary times we live in call for some serious shaking up of the status quo. While the Sun, Moon, and Venus in Libra speak gently and ask, “Can’t everyone just get along?” Uranus and Eris in Aries shout from across the zodiac, “Wake up! There are some huge elephants in the room that must be confronted!”

I’m not saying that you can’t have loving, peaceful, and harmonious relationships during this new lunar cycle. I am saying that if you’ve been sweeping things under the rug or zipping your lips, now is the time to have the courage to confront what’s out of balance. It’s time to work through conflict to arrive at true peace, rather than trying to prop up a pretty-looking illusion of peace. It’s impossible to have true and lasting peace if there is an imbalance of power, if boundaries are being invaded, if justice has not been served, or if needs are disrespected. Lady Justice stands poised to take action with a balance (Libra) in one hand and a sword and lightning bolt (Aries and Uranus) in the other.

One of the biggest elephants in our collective living room is the deeply entrenched system of patriarchy. It’s impossible to have true and lasting peace within a system that puts power primarily in the hands of men (mostly white, heterosexual, Christian men). It would be just as impossible to have true and lasting peace if all the power were in the hands of women. This truth should be self-evident:  All men and women and non-binary identified people are created equal. But that truth has been trampled upon for thousands of years under patriarchy’s heavy boots.

The elephant of patriarchy does not represent every man. Not all men abuse power. Most of the men I know personally respect women’s equality and the civil rights of all people. But the system of patriarchy has left deep imprints and wounds in the psyches of people of all genders. Those who are privileged with power and resources often do not feel the pain of the imbalance, but patriarchy has harmed everyone, not just women. Those who lack the privilege of power and resources feel the imbalance most intensely so they are the ones who feel the greatest need to speak up and take action to bring things back into balance.

The recent news stories about the intimidating, abusive, and sexually predatory behavior of Harvey Weinstein seems to have cracked something open. This is not just a story about the abuse of power by Harvey Weinstein, or Bill Cosby, or Bill O’Reilly, or Donald Trump, or Roger Ailes. This is a story about the big fat patriarchy elephant that’s been in the room for a very long time. Knowing the astrology that’s affecting us, I believe this won’t be just one more time when men in power are exposed only to have the issue just slip quietly back underground. Something is cracking open. That’s what Uranus does…it sends a lightning bolt that cracks things apart. It catalyzes a breakdown so we can have a collective breakthrough.

What’s breaking through is our need to reintegrate the Divine Feminine into our lives. For many men, being cut off from the Divine Feminine has disconnected them from their own hearts, their intuition, their vulnerability, and their ability to give and receive nurturance. In the realm of sexuality, many men suffer from an intense longing for the sensuality, beauty, and sexual power of the Divine Feminine which they believe exists only, and forever, outside of themselves. Women then become sexualized objects to be captured, possessed, and put on display.

Reclaiming the Divine Feminine is just as important for women. The Divine Feminine is not only gentle, compassionate, and nurturing, She is also bursting with creative power, ready to birth a new way of living on this planet. She expresses a sweet love with the unconditional heart of the Divine Mother and a fierce love with the courageous heart of a lioness. She is rising up, now, as Eris in Aries. She says, “The reign of patriarchy must end, for the benefit of all beings”. She says, “Abuse of power, in sexual ways and all ways, must stop! Now!”

Rise up, my sisters, rise up! Speak out, my brothers, speak out!

Let’s bring things into true balance and create lasting peace and harmony in all our relations.

The Goddess Raises Her Voice

The Divine Feminine, which has been repressed and maligned for thousands of years under patriarchal domination, is now re-emerging. At this Gemini Full Moon, we can hear the voices of several goddess archetypes as they participate in a complex configuration called a Mystic Rectangle. The Goddess is raising her voice and we can hear Her message carried on the high tide of the Full Moon. Let’s consider what’s being expressed at each of the four points that mark out the corners of this Mystic Triangle, which are in the signs of Gemini, Sagittarius, Aries, and Libra.

(1) The Gemini Moon is curious and wants more and more information. In Gemini’s quest for understanding, it can sometimes be overly influenced by the ideas, beliefs, and opinions of others. When Gemini is functioning well, it helps you formulate your own ideas so you can find your own voice.

(2) Illuminating the full face of this Gemini Moon is the Sun in Sagittarius. Sagittarius is clear about its direction and purpose, and is not shy about sharing its perspective on things, especially when joined by wise old Saturn, who can sometimes be a bit opinionated and overbearing. Teaming up with the Sun and Saturn is an interesting trio of goddesses: Juno, Lilith, and Hygeia.

Hygeia helps us maintain a sense of well-being, and in Sagittarius, our well-being is connected to being about our mission in life, seeking the Truth, and speaking our truth.

Hygeia

While the patriarchal view casts Juno as the “good wife” and Lilith as the “nasty woman” who is untamed, fiercely independent, and freely expressive of her sexuality, I see this pairing of Juno and Lilith in a different light. As Juno and Lilith walk arm in arm, we can partner cooperatively and harmoniously with others (Juno) who share our mission AND we can maintain our autonomy, stay wild at heart, and have exciting adventures in our quest for Truth (Lilith).

(3) Now let’s look at the third point of this Mystic Rectangle, which is in the sign of volcano_lightning-nasaAries, the Warrior. Here’s where things get really fired up and the Goddess turns up the volume. Uranus, Eris, and Ceres join forces to say “No more!”. Uranus says, “No more status quo.” Then, it throws down unexpected lightning bolts to break up the old patriarchal paradigm and catalyze revolutionary change.

Eris is considered a “dark goddess” like Kali, Black Tara, and Sekhmet. These goddesses can be fierce and wrathful. They don’t take any shit. According to the patriarchal myth, Eris is another “nasty woman”, the Goddess of  Discord. As the story goes, Eris was upset because she wasn’t invited to a party. Feeling snubbed and rejected, she did something that ignited chaos and discord among the party-goers.

Demeter Mourning Persephone

Now, with Eris in the sign of Aries, you can bet she’s pissed off. But here’s a new take on Eris: she’s pissed at the patriarchy for rejecting and trampling on the Divine Feminine. She says, “No more abuse! No more abuse of women. No more abuse of Mother Nature. No more abuse PERIOD.”

Ceres (aka Demeter) is also angry. Her daughter, Persephone, was abducted and raped by Pluto, God of the underworld. Ceres screams, “No more rape of our daughters, our sisters, our mothers! No more rape of the Earth!”  Working together in fiery, passionate, and powerful Aries, Uranus, Eris, and Ceres create a formidable trio of activists.

(4) The fourth point of this Mystic Rectangle brings in the calming influence of Jupiter in Libra. Libra encourages us to seek balance and work toward the peaceful resolution of conflicts. Libra the Peacemaker and Aries the Activist are brought into dialogue by their participation in this Mystic Rectangle, so things won’t get too volatile and chaotic. Libra looks for the win-win. As Bob Marley says, “You can’t have peace without justice.”pallas_athene_fountain_vienna

What can we learn from the integration of all four points of this Full Moon Mystic Rectangle? On the collective level, we are witnessing the reemergence of the Divine Feminine. As she reclaims Her voice, she speaks as the Wise Woman who guides us along pathways to Universal Truth. As she raises her voice in anger at the abuses being perpetrated by the patriarchy, she draws a firm line in the sand. If this line is crossed, She’s ready to wield a sword of protection to stop abuse and end injustice.

On the personal level, the message is to know your truth and speak your truth. Use the power of anger in healthy ways…not to harm others but to set limits on those who would do harm to you. Anger is activating and gives us the courage to say, “No more!” No, you can’t invade my boundaries. No, you can’t disrespect me. No, I won’t give my power away to you. Sometimes we need a spark of anger to motivate us to take action, not just on our own behalf, but to stop injustice in the world and to prevent others from being hurt. In what ways are you being called to action? Take care that your anger doesn’t burn you up or burn you out, so you can maintain balance within yourself.

Are You Selfish Enough?

 Let’s re-frame the word “selfish”

When I was about 20 years old, I read a book titled, “When I Say “No”, I Feel Guilty”. That book was an eye-opener for me.  As a shy college student, I wanted to be liked, I wanted to think of myself as a nice person, and I was afraid to deal with conflict.  I thought saying “Yes” was the nice thing to do.  Eventually, I got the hang of saying “No”, but I must admit the temptation to feel guilty can still rear it’s ugly head. Loving myself enough to be “selfish” is an ongoing process.

DON'T BE SELFISH.framedA lot of us were taught to believe that it’s “selfish” to ask for what you want, or say “No” to what you don’t want. But stop and think about it: Who was the first person to accuse you of being “selfish”?  It was probably a parent or maybe a sibling. As very young children, we learn that we’re supposed to play nice, share our toys, and let Johnny go first.  These are important lessons for a 3 year old. But as an adult, if you ignore your own needs in order to play Mr. Nice Guy, you lose.  You lose your self-respect, your power, and your autonomy.  It might make everyone around you happy, but are you happy?

Here are five clues that you may not be selfish enough:

1) You’re more concerned with what’s fair to others than what’s fair to you.

2) You attract people who are very focused on themselves.

3) You’re afraid to ask for what you want.

4) You’re not sure what you want.

5) When you say “No”, you feel guilty.

Let’s turn it around.

  • Give yourself permission to be selfish.  Give yourself permission to be self-loving.
  • Listen to your gut feelings. Is your gut saying “Yes” or “No”?  If someone asks you to do something, check in with how you feel. Does the thought of doing it make you feel heavy or light?
  • Know that if you say “No”, the other person is free to react however they choose, but you don’t need to feel guilty about being true to yourself.
  • Take time in solitude to listen deeply to the prayer of your heart. What is your heart’s desire?  Then, have the courage to ask for what you want.
  • Take some steps, however big or small, to create a life that makes your soul sing.

As Jeshua says, in The Way of Mastery, “Self love is the love of the Creator. You cannot love the Creator while rejecting the Creator’s creation.”  Self love.WOM.lily

So, it turns out that loving yourself is actually the spiritual thing to do!  Who knew?

Leave a comment and let me know an act of self-loving-kindness that you did today.

Lunar Eclipse & Grand Cross: Rocking the Boat

La_Chasse-galerie_(1906)

Row, row, row your boat gently down the stream…merrily, merrily…Whoops!

The currents are pretty strong, these days, and your boat may be getting rocked…or maybe it’s time for you to rock the boat. A lunar eclipse, with Moon in Libra and Sun in Aries, unfolds in the wee hours of the morning on April 15.  A few days later, there’s a cardinal Grand Cross (Uranus in Aries opposite Mars in Libra and Pluto in Capricorn opposite Jupiter in Cancer).  This is not the time to hold on to the status quo, especially if these Grand Cross planets are connecting with significant points in your chart.*  These powerful energies present an opportunity to take action, and create a whole new level of harmony. Let’s explore what rocking the boat can do for you:

Rocking the Self

  • Have you been playing small?  You may feel stirred up, because you need to claim your power, take a bold action, or step into a leadership role.
  • Is there something about yourself you just can’t run away from anymore?  Be courageous in facing your shadow.
  • Your True Self is way more than your personality. Inquire into your deepest nature. Explore the question, “What am I?”

Rocking Your Relationships

  • Speak your truth about what you need. If that brings up conflict, be willing to communicate and find a “win-win” resolution.
  • Have you been letting someone take advantage of you, disrespect you, or bully you?  It’s time to say, “No more!”
  • Is the form of your relationship no longer serving your mutual growth?  It’s possible to change the form and keep the love.

Rocking the World

  • Sustainable peace can only be built on a foundation of fairness and equal sharing of power.  Stand up for what is just.
  • If the world is rocking around you, whether it’s earth changes or political upheaval, you can still keep your inner peace.

In each of these scenarios, there are actions you can take, or changes you can make, that can lead to greater harmony.  When we make changes that bring us more in line with ourselves, we create more harmony within. When we stand up for ourselves, even if it brings up conflict, it ultimately makes our relationships more balanced. And when we work for justice, and respond to chaos from a place of inner peace, we create more harmony in the world.  So go ahead, rock the boat, baby!

*At the time of the eclipse, the Moon will be at 25 degrees Libra and the Sun at 25 degrees Aries.  The Grand Cross involves planets at 13 degrees of the Cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, and Capricorn).  If you have placements in your natal chart between 8 and 30 degrees, in any of the cardinal signs, you are significantly influenced by the current astrology.  You may find it helpful to have an astrology consultation to clarify what actions you can take that will create more harmony in your life.

Playing with Fire

With so many planets in Aries this month, the Fire element is in the house! How can we play with Fire, in our relationships, and not get burned? Fire can show up in lots of different ways: the spark of passion that fuels sexual excitement; a twinkle in the eye that incites play and laughter; or the flash of inspiration that sets you off on bold adventures. Fire gets things moving, and the springtime energy of Aries brings us back to life, after winter’s hibernation. What is stirring within you, in regard to relationships? What do you want to birth or renew? What (or who) are you motivated to move towards? What are you fired up about creating with a partner?

While the Fire element brings action, heat, and illumination, it can also get out of hand. We don’t want to burn the house down! When excessive, in a relationship, Fire can show up as an over-emphasis on “me” vs. “we”, which can ignite conflicts. Healthy self-assertion is a form of Fire that helps us stand up for our needs. But when out of balance, Fire can become aggressive, crashing recklessly past personal boundaries. That kind of fire will burn bridges and ruin relationships. In the bedroom, Fire is hot (in a good way)!  When unbridled passion explodes in ecstasy, happily exhausted lovers bask in the afterglow.  But blind passion can drive people to take stupid risks that lead to destruction. Some examples: Getting an STD after having unprotected sex or having an illicit affair that destroys a marriage.

Playing with Fire can be dangerous, or it can be a pleasure. It all depends on how well the Fire is cooperating with the other three elements. When Fire is in harmony with the Water of emotions, the clear communication of the Air element, and the stability of Earth, it can bring pure delight to any relationship! Take a look at how fire is showing up within you and in your relationships. Maybe you need to stoke the fire, or maybe you need to contain it. Maybe you need to act with courage, and ask for what you want. Or maybe you need to listen more closely, to understand the heart’s desire of your beloved. This month, as the temperature rises, have fun and channel your passion in creative ways!
